美国历来是世界上的体育大国。在历届奥运会、世界大学生运动会、泛美运动会以及篮球、排球、田径、游泳、举重、拳击、体操、网球等世界锦标赛、世界杯赛和其它世界重大比赛中均名列前茅,唯独足球这个运动项目至今在美国仍处于萌芽状态,甚至时至今日,美国还没有全国性的职业足球联赛。提到足球,美国人总是谈他们的美式足球(美式橄榄球),而对世界上最受欢迎的“世界第一运动”却不屑一顾。只要翻阅一下美国足球队在历届世界杯足球赛中的战绩,便可一目了然地看出,这一倍受歧视的运动项目在美国所处的冷落地位。
