American Leishmaniasis (NWCL) caused by Leishmania has become an important health problem in Central and South America. Cell-mediated immune response (CMI) has a major impact on the immune pathogenesis and healing of the disease. The complex pathogenic processes resulting from HIV infection directly affect the T cell differentiation process necessary for an effective immune response. Some of the abnormal clinical manifestations of leishmaniasis reported in AIDS-related NWCL may be associated with the lower ability to control T cell-mediated immune responses disseminated by parasites
