In ancient Greek and Egyptian societies,weightliftingwas used to measure athletes’strength and power.Although weightlifting was not included in the ancientOlympic Games,it was a common sport among youngathletes,and weightlifting competitions were commonlyheld during festivals in ancient Greece and Egypt.It is saidthat an athlete named Bybon once lifted a stone weighing143.3 kg by one single hand.The stone was found inOlympia and can be dated back to the 6th Century BCE.Another stone,weighting 480 kg,bears an inscription~1describing the famous athlete named Eumastas who oncelifted the stone off the ground.In Egypt,decorative reliefs~2showing people lifting sacks filled with sand can becommonly seen on the tombs of ancient kings.
