Gap junctions are membrane ion channels that directly exchange metabolic components and second messenger materials for communication between cells. Recently, multiple gene families of connexin (Cx) have been demonstrated. Although there are highly homologous structural sequences and the same deduced major domains among Cx members, the expression of gap junctions differs. Since the simultaneous expression of two or more Cx proteins within a single tissue complicates the detection of individual Cx expression features, the regulation of gap junction expression and its role in cellular activity remains unknown. Cx molecular engineering studies of quail egg cells under in vitro conditions
