There have been several recent reports describing a new clinical pathology syndrome found in adult leukemia patients. Patients have increased platelet counts, abnormal megakaryocytes, and poor response to chemotherapy. Chromosome analysis revealed that there were chromosome 2 rearrangements of q21 and q26 in more than 50% of cases. These rearrangements occur near the transferrin gene (3q21) and the transferrin autoreceptor gene (3q26). The molecular level analysis showed that the cleavage of q21 caused the transferrin gene to split and the transferrin and transferrin receptor genes changed.
