Shanghai has opened its doors from 1843 to the end of the 19th century and has formed a pattern of opening to the outside world. The public settlements (merged between the British and American concessions in the late 19th century into the public concession) have created a pattern of tripartite divisions between the French Concession and the Chinese concession outside the concession. Since then, the various drastic changes it undergone have brought about great changes in both the social structure and the superstructure. Reflected in the art market, traditional collections have been shedding and circulating at an unprecedented rate. All this has caused Shanghai to quickly become one of the largest antiques market in China and jointly occupy the leading position in the art market with Beijing.
