In this paper, a diagnostic analysis was made on the explosive development of a strong temperate oceanic cyclone from March 11 to March 16, 1982 in the western North Pacific. The characteristics and interactions of the baroclinic instability and adiabatic heating processes at different stages of cyclone development are discussed. The analysis reveals that in the early stage of the cyclone the disturbance of the lower and upper layers is separated in the vertical direction, and the scale and velocity are different. The relative phase analysis of the perturbation of the isentropic potential vorticity at the upper and lower levels found that baroclinic instability conditions were unfavorable to development during the initial stage of development and very favorable during the period of the outbreak. From the analysis of the wet-edge vorticity and water vapor convergence, the analysis of isentropic and non-geostrophic motion, the non-adiabatic heating process is very important in the first two stages. Baroclinic instability and non-adiabatic heating process during the explosion phase produce positive feedback, which makes the cyclone get explosive development.
