Gang Bi is a contemporary and controversial novelist in Senegal. Her autobiographical novels narrate the experiences and psychological experiences of the protagonists when they study in Europe. She and the western culture are alien to and strongly criticized. She deeply cherished the memory of African cultural traditions and eventually returned to Senegal. She embraced African culture and tradition in principle and believed that she found her place for spiritual peace and roots of culture here. However, the author also expressed great confusion over the increasingly “sanctified” African tradition as a result of the invasion of Western colonial culture. She also examines the existence of traditional African cultures. In short, her understanding of Western culture and African culture are both contradictory and chaotic, and it is precisely this contradiction and chaos that makes her novels more intriguing.
