The AIM-120 Advanced Mid-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM), jointly developed by the Air Force / Navy, caused troubles due to too high unit prices and delays in production. It has now been approved by the Pentagon and Congress for limited production since 1987, and the second producer, Ray Siene Company received about 80 million U.S. dollars in contracts to assemble 15 rounds of qualified test bombs. AMFAM’s acquisition funding was not allocated in fiscal year 1986. This funding was postponed until 1987, when Hughes will produce 145 missiles under a pilot low-speed production program and Raytheon will produce 115.
