According to the analysis of the US Natural Gas Research Institute, a large amount of natural gas that can not be mined by conventional methods is contained in dense gas sands in the western United States, Devonian gas-bearing shale in the east, coal seams and geological hydrostatic zones. By 1990, 425 to 539 billion cubic meters of unconventional natural gas could be mined annually from tight sand, Devonian shale and coal seams by adopting advanced technologies. Assuming a successful mining process improvement and no restrictions on demand, capital, labor and equipment, the output of such natural gas will soar by the year 2000
