At the Ninth International Axel Axis Conference in Montreal, Canada, in September 1988, one of the speakers suggested that wheels and rails were the most worn-out components of the rail system. He thinks brake shoes should also be included, so the narrative will be more accurate. However, at previous axles conferences, the wear between wheel and rail mainly focused on the various links with each other. Most of the problems studied were theoretical aspects related to wheel alignment or improved microstructure and physical properties. Of course, these issues are still to be raised at this conference, but paying particular attention to those areas that are more directly related to the wheel, axle, bearing and orbit performance. D.D.W.Leung from the Canadian Department of Transportation did
