《喜福会》是华裔美国女作家谭恩美的成名作。它的巨大成功,除了很大一部分归功于作品的情感主线外,作者采用“讲故事”的叙述策略,也赋予了小说动人的魅力。更为重要的是,谭恩美把“讲故事”这种口头文学形式作为小说中母女们进行交流的媒介,用以挖掘人物的内心世界,传达小说主旨。对于小说中的两组人物,无论是需要从苦难的过去中获取自我意识连续性的母亲们,还是由于历史感的缺失迫切需要自我身份建构的女儿们,“讲故事”都具有深刻的意义。在此将分析的重点放在“讲故事”的第二个功能上。
“The Joy Luck Club” is a famous actress of Chinese American writer Amy Tan. Its great success, except for a large part of the emotional main line of the work, adopts “narrative strategies” of “storytelling” and gives the novel its charming charm. More importantly, Amy Tan uses the oral literary form of “storytelling” as the medium of communication between mothers and daughters in the novel, in order to excavate the inner world of characters and convey the essence of the novel. For the two groups of characters in the novel, both mothers who need continuity of self-consciousness from the past of misery, or daughters who urgently need self-identity construction due to the lack of historical sense, “storytelling” has profound significance. The analysis here focuses on the second function of “storytelling.”
