Social semiotic theory holds that symbols consist of symbols, objects and interpreters. According to the interrelationship among them, the meaning of language symbols is divided into three categories: reference, meaning and pragmatics. Based on the classification of the meaning of social semiotics, the paper explores the meaning loss in Saab Boley’s English translation of Water Margin and discusses in depth the reasons for the loss. The results show that due to being rooted in different historical and cultural backgrounds, the differences between different languages are absolute, and the loss of meaning in the process of translation is also inevitable. The translator can only minimize the loss of various meanings through the flexible application of various translation skills and on the basis of correctly conveying the original textual information.
