As a feminist writer, Ding Ling and Zhang Ailing wrote female desires with feminine experiences and discussed feminine predicaments and breakthrough strategies since the May 4th Movement. However, they focus on female desires in different ways: Ding Ling focuses on the development of female spiritual desires, and Zhang Ailing focuses on the ontological meanings of female material desires for female survival. Their writing is continuous in time and complementary in content, which jointly highlights the difficult and tortuous journey of Chinese women’s desires in the 1920s and 1940s.
