The Punishment of Prison
I love my little girl no less than any mother, yet we live apart. I am in prison. I cant take her to school,or cuddle(搂抱)her,or put her to bed each night. Sometimes,on the phone, she says,“Don’t ever be naughty again,Mummy.”Her pain…my punishment.
Lost for Words
It was the longest suicide(自杀)note the inspector(监察员)had ever seen. A fine tube connecting an artery(动脉)to a fountain pen had enabled the man to kill himself with his own words. Sadly his blood supply had been insufficient(不足的,无能的)to complete his tale. That was the story of his life.
Supplies,Surprise
Three shipwrecked(失事船的)sailors were washed ashore(上岸)on Mururoa Atoll. They found it deserted(被丢弃),but they pooled(共享,集中)their resourcefulness(资源,智谋),constructing shelters(藏身之处),harvesting food, hunting and fishing—and they survived(活下来). Some weeks later they gathered excitedly at the sound of an approaching(临近的)aeroplane.“Look,”they cried,“We’re saved! They are dropping supplies.”
The Officer and the Thug
A Chief of Police who had seen an officer beating a thug(罪犯)was very indignant(愤怒的)and said he must not do so any more on pain of dismissal(以解雇为惩罚).
“Don’t be too hard on me,”said the officer, smiling;“I was beating him with a stuffed club(用……制的警棍).”
“Nevertheless(不过),”persisted the Chief of Police, “it was a liberty that must have been very disagreeable, though it may not have hurt. Please do not repeat it.”
“But,”said the officer,still smiling,“it was a stuffed thug.”
In attempting(试图)to express his gratification(喜悦,满足)the Chief of Police thrust his right hand with such violence(暴力)that his skin was ruptured(扯裂)at the armpit(腋窝)and a stream of sawdust(锯末,表明警官也是用锯末填制的)poured from the wound. He was a stuffed Chief of Police.
