From 2000 to 2010, the demand for lubricants in major Asian countries will reach an annual average of 4.2%, much higher than the average annual growth rate of 2.7% in 1990-1999. By 2010, the lubricating oil market share in the Asia Pacific region will reach one third of the world. Although there is great potential for growth in demand for lubricants, in the near term lube producers have had to cope with overcapacity and margins that are extremely low. Most of the excess capacity in the Asia-Pacific region is only used to produce low-quality base oils, while the fastest-growing demand is high-quality lubricants. Although most of the countries in the Asia-Pacific region lag behind the developed countries such as the United States in the quality standards of lubricants, the standards of developed countries such as the United States will become the development direction of lubricants in the Asia-Pacific region. All countries in the Asia-Pacific region have also taken or are taking steps to increase their lubricants quality. The market size and product composition of lubricants in the Asia Pacific region will undergo major changes in the next 10 years.
