Since the 14th century humanist Petraklar described the era as “dark age, ” many humanists and their descendants hold negative views on the cultural studies of this period. Beginning with the romanticist movement of the early 19th century, people began to change their view on the dark side of the Middle Ages. This article will discuss the merits and demerits of medieval culture from four aspects.
