Coulomb’s formula for earth pressure only studied the situation of no-face loading behind the wall. The formula can also be used for full-loading, but it is not suitable for partial surface loading. Retaining walls often have partial surface loading, so the Coulomb formula cannot meet the needs. In the long-term practice, many calculation methods have been deduced from Coulomb theory, adapted to the needs, enriched in the Coulomb method, and widely used in the calculation of the active pressure on retaining walls without adhesive filler. Some of these methods also have graphic methods. The formula for the numerical solution of earth pressure is mostly derived from the relational expression of E=f(θ), and the derivative dE/dθ=0 is obtained.
