Aristotle proposed “υπokεíμενoν” (in this text, in its Latin form of the spelling hypokeimenon) as one of the three primitives of the natural being. Understanding it is of great importance in understanding what Aristotle said of the natural being and of its evolution. Moreover, it is also a concept that is closely related to the substantive issue in Aristotle’s thought. Analyzing and clarifying this concept is of great importance in understanding Aristotelian thinking and the primary substantive issues. By analyzing the related contents in the first volume of “Physics”, we confirm that hy-pokeimenon has two basic meanings. They are interrelated again.
