中国航空工业总公司决定编写出版《航空发动机设计手册》,并列为“八五”、“九五”重点工作之一。该《手册》是一套构成内容齐全,用于指导发动机设计工作的大型系列工具书,将是我国40年来航空发动机设计领域的技术总结。它的编写出版对于承上启下,振兴航空工业,把我国航空发动机技术水平推向一个新的高度,具有重要意义。 根据军、民机所用动力装置——涡喷、涡扇发动机与涡轴、涡浆发动机的研制需要,《手册》分为19个分册,约1600万字,计划用5年时间完成,即1998年完成全套《手册》的出版工作。各分册分别由606所、608所、624所、614所、301所和北航等作为主编单位。
