我在中国画的道路上艰难地走了几十年,“回首但看来时路”,深深感谢曾经从不同的方面熏陶或教导我的徐悲鸿、黄君璧、谢稚柳、傅抱石、陈之佛等老师。 我有一方图章,文曰:“绘形传神抒情寄意”。绘画离不开形,写实或夸张变形都有形。形是绘画的语言之一,最好一听就懂,不宜使人费猜。但如仅止相形似,那就是“论画以形似,见与儿童邻”了;最好是形神兼备。为了传神,以神统帅形,或简练概括,或夸张变形,目的在于突出对象的主要特征,使其更美更生动。
