In the past two years, North America has become the major supplier of wood chips in Europe. In 2010, 1.6 million tons of sawdust were shipped from the United States and Canada to the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Belgium, doubling the 2008 level. The European Union said that by 2020, at least 20% of the energy consumption should be provided by renewable energy sources. To this end, many countries have increased the use of chips and sawdust sticks. In 2010, 11 million tons of sawdust rods were consumed, an increase of about 7% over the previous year. Over the past few years, the demand for sawdust sticks in some European countries has surpassed the production of their own country, thus importing not only from neighboring countries but also from North America. In the past 10 years, Canada has been the major overseas supplier. After 2008, the United States also started to export in 2010, reaching 600,000 t.
