Objective To investigate the value of telomerase activity in urine exfoliated cells in the monitoring of postoperative recurrence of bladder cancer. Methods Urine was collected from 60 patients with bladder cancer for 3 years. PCR-ELISA was used to detect telomerase activity of exfoliated cells in urine to guide cystoscopy and confirm the diagnosis. Results The urine exfoliated cells of 14 patients were positive for telomerase activity, of which 10 were diagnosed and relapsed. The telomerase activity was negative in 2 patients and the activity of telomerase in urine exfoliated cells was lower in patients with postoperative bladder cancer The sensitivity and specificity were 80.0% and 87.5%, respectively. Conclusion The determination of telomerase activity in urine exfoliated cells is an effective method for postoperative recurrence of bladder cancer and can guide the targeted cystoscopy.
