Walt Whitman, the famous 19th-century American poet, humanist and father of modern American poetry. Whitman was deeply influenced by democrats Thomas Paine and Emerson, with a strong tendency toward democracy and utopian socialism. He was born in a poor family in 1819. As the second child of nine brothers and sisters (four of whom are handicapped), he spent six years studying printing, apprenticeship, carpentry, teachers and journalists. This experience of life and the prevailing U.S. situation made Whitman set out from the standpoint of radical bourgeois democracy, praising the democracy and freedom of the United States, praising the magic and greatness of nature, and singing the hardworking and bravery of laborers.
