亨利·詹姆斯和H.G.威尔斯身处相近的年代,同样经历了维多利亚时代,深受维多利亚文学的影响。在塑造女性角色时,二者有别于前人的“房屋里的天使”等,创造了更加勇敢、善良、独立的女性角色。然而,有别于女性作家笔下为寻求独立自我,思想解放而努力的女主人公,亨利·詹姆斯和H.G.威尔斯所赞颂的美丽勇敢的女性,仍然不能摆脱低人一等的身份和美梦毁灭的悲惨命运。同时,亨利·詹姆斯和H.G.威尔斯截然不同的家庭、社会背景与人生经历,使得二者看待女性的角度存在偏差,这也造成了二者笔下的女性角色在小说中所起的作用和重要性完全不同。
Henry James and H.G. Wells are in similar age, also experienced the Victorian era, deeply influenced by the Victorian literature. Wells still can not get rid of the inferior fame and the miserable fate of the dreams to destroy. At the same time, the completely different family, social background and life experiences of Henry James and HG Wells make the perspectives of the two women biased, which also caused the role and importance of female characters in the novel Sex is completely different.
