France is experimenting with a ground-based military holographic radar system that attempts to conduct a vast and accurate exploration of air targets close to the border. The VHF radar net covers the entire ground plane and extends outward to give a continuous range of motion. One test device has been tracking the wake of meteors in the upper atmosphere of the Earth normally. The holographic technique of this radar reproduces the amplitude and phase distribution of the target causing perturbation of the wave through the radar coverage area. The radar network uses many omni-directional transmitters and receivers spread over a wide area, each of which operates continuously to illuminate the area covered.
