Cleft palate is a common birth defect,for which the morbidity is ~ 1 in 2500 live births worldwide [1].And the frequent occurrence of such birth defect greatly influenced the quality of the newbo population and underscored the urgency to clarify its pathogenesis.In mammals,adhesion and fusion of the palatal shelves are essential steps during the development of secondary shelves and critically depend on the removal of the medial edge epithelia (MEE) [2].Three mechanisms have been proposed for the removal of MEE:lateral migration into the oral or nasal epithelium,epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT),and apoptosis [3].And many signaling molecules have been reported to be implicated in the removal of MEE cells,such as fibroblast growth factor β (TGFβ),sonic hedgehog homolog (Shh),wingless-type MMTV integration site family members (Wnt),and so on [4].
