尼泊尔王国地处喜马拉雅山脉中段南坡,面积14.7万平方千米,人口2647万。北部和南部居民多为蒙古人种,中部居住着蒙古-雅利安混血人种。有廓尔克、尼瓦尔、夏尔巴等30多个民族。尼泊尔语为国语,政府部门通用英语。高山王国尼泊尔纬度与我国浙江省大体相当。北部高山区平均海拔4800米以上,终年寒冷;中部山地区岭谷相间,冬暖夏凉;南部平原区面积较小,海拔在200米以下,常年暖热,是主要农业区。各地6月～9月为雨季,降水充沛。尼泊尔是个著名的山国。喜马拉雅山脉10座海拔8000米以上的高峰,有3座位于其国土上,另有5座位于其国境线上。境内海拔在6100米以上的雪峰有240座。高山深谷中,众多湍急的河流奔腾南下,水能资源极其丰富,但目前已开发的还不到可开发水能的0.5%。森林覆盖率近30%。矿产较少,仅云母、大理石、石灰石有少量开采。敬神的国度尼泊尔居民81%信仰印度教,11%信仰佛教,以印度教为国教。在尼泊尔,似乎处处有神,事事与神相关,人们信神、敬神。国王和菩提树都被看做是保护神毗湿奴
