真正发展艺术人类学便必须要将之建立在方法论庸俗主义的基础之上。艺术应归属于技术体系之中,作为“制造之物”是它的基本特质,然而魅惑性又是技术实践活动过程所固有的特性,因而艺术品可以说是一种具有魅惑性的技术过程的产物,且这种魅惑力要以一种“魔法理念”才能解读,与其说艺术品是一种物质存在,不如说它是一种工艺过程的展示。工艺技术的“难度性”使艺术品具有了价值和感染力,这种价值所指的不仅仅是将之占有的欲望,还指它所具有的基本物质特性。艺术品又是社会化的,它存在于社会过程之中。艺术品创作的技术过程与由其产生的社会关系之间,具有一种同源的关系。魔法与技术之间并不是对立的关系,二者都是寻求技术解决方案的途径,因而艺术家既是技师也是魔法师。特洛布里恩群岛的园艺活动便像是一场充满了技术活动与魔法活动的集体艺术创作。
