中学英语新教材中出现了三个表示“开始”之意的单词:begin,start和open。同学们对这三个词不会用,也时常混淆不清。如对下面两句的翻译:1．商店开门:上午8点至下午6点。2．该公司三年前开始兴建,工厂上个月开工投产。学生译成:1．The store opens from 8 a.m.to 6 p.m..2．The company was begun to build 3 years ago and the factory opened last month．以上两句的译文错在何处?怎样改正?这要从begin,start和open三词的区别谈起。begin,start和open三词都是瞬间动词,及物和不及物皆可,都有“开、开始”之意。但是,open指的是“关闭的或类似关闭着的东西”,常译成“打开、张开、睁开、展开、开始、开放、开学、开幕、开门(营业)”等。如:
There are three words in the new middle school English teaching material that indicate “beginning”: begin, start and open. Students will not use these three words and they are often confused.
