在《史记》和《汉书》以来的文献中,多有关于秦始皇“万里长城”的记载。现今对于秦始皇“万里长城”本身之所指、起至、走向等方面,仍然存在一些未解决的问题。这一是由于田野工作的不足,另外是由于研究者对于文献仍不能察其究竟所造成的。本文拟对文献所记载的秦始皇长城西端的起首地——“临洮”的相关问题加以评说,并提出自己的看法。一关于秦始皇长城西端起首地的诸家观点评说对于秦始皇长城西段的研究,往往与更早的战国时期的秦昭王长城纠结在一起,二者虽有沿袭的关系,但修筑时代却是不同的,此点须先行强调。
