Projects that extend the reach of extended wells are in the planning stages around the world and drilling engineers are no longer worried about whether they can drill 50000 ft (1 ft = 30.48 cm) of extended wells. Instead, they worry about drilling safely and efficiently. It is estimated that the cost of drilling into the last 10% of the target area accounts for half of the total cost. This article discusses the latest drilling technologies of great interest for the future of well extension applications, including the application benefits and problems of synthetic drill pipe, titanium drill pipe and aluminum drill pipe.
