British medical researchers invented a clever way to deal with human and rodent genes to produce antibodies that attack and destroy harmful cells such as cancer cells. Researchers from Molecular Biology Laboratories, Medical Research Institute and Department of Pathology, University of Cambridge, will combine antibody fragments obtained from rats with human antibodies. The result is a hybrid antibody that combines the ability of rodent antibodies to destroy unwanted cells and the ability of human antibodies to avoid body rejection. The researchers isolated antibodies from human white blood cells injected into rats. Some mouse antibodies have activity against a specific human protein or antigen (CAMPATH-1). CAM-PATH-1 is an antigen that appears on some mature white blood cells rather than young cells that are derived from mature white blood cells, ie, stem cells. The part of the rat antibody called the hypervariable region has the activity of binding to this antigen. Researcher
