基诺民族是一个仅有本民族语言,没有本民族文字,没有文献典籍,社会发育程度及生产力发展相对较低的民族,因此就使得基诺族传统的音乐实践活动不仅是基诺族社会个体成员的音乐行为,而且也是社会集体的、民族的、类的音乐活动,一代又一代的基诺人通过对自身传统音乐体系的口耳相传,来使自身在长期狩猎、采集、农耕、建筑、宗教、丧葬、婚姻甚至爱情等实体活动过程中逐渐积累起来的历史知识、地理知识、生产知识、生活知识、社会知识等得以顺利传递、延续,为生活在基诺族传统社会中的人们,提供应对环境改变的心理依托及独特的创造力,影响人们的思维模式与审美取向,反映与表达了基诺族对自身、对自然、对社会、对他人的认识过程与状态。
