晚清中国,被称为是睁开眼睛看世界,同时又不断融入世界并与世界互动的一段时期。1910年的南洋劝业会,是古老中国学习西方举办的第一次世界博览会。那么,晚清时期的中国对外国博览会是如何认识和介绍的,又为什么要举办世博会,中国的第一次世博会——南洋劝业会举办的情况又如何呢?当时农工商部的报纸——《商务官报》刊载的文章,给了我们从一个侧面对南洋劝业会进行观察和分析的窗口,使我们能够从一个具体的侧面来观察中国人对世界的认识和感受,同时也能够折射出该时期中国社会的大体面貌以及中国人对未来社会发展的描绘和追求。在上海世博会举办的今天,回顾一个世纪前中国举办的世博会,可说是一种别样的纪念。
