INTRODUCTIONEndoscopy has revolutionised our management ofmany gastrointestinal disorders over the past 30years.We are increasingly able to diagnosegastrointestinal(GI)tumors at an early stage,andendoscopic therapy has made a difference to theoutcome of GI haemorrhage.We still rely onsurgery for cure of cancer but as diagnostictechniques improve the goal of minimally invasivediagnosis and therapy appears ever more attainable.As populations get older,it is also increasinglydesirable.Laser light can be used for both diagnosisand therapy in the gut.This article reviews thevalue of lasers in these areas.
