Under the cover of darkness, Claude slips through the back door of an unknown house and enters the kitchen. As its unsuspecting (未料到的;不知情的) owners sleep inside, the intruder (闯入者) pads (蹑手蹑脚地走) over the floor with barely a sound. He’s done this before. He knows what he is looking for and he knows how to get it. But it isn’t jewellery or money that he is after — it’s food.
This is a new television show, Horizon: The Secret Life of the Cat (BBC2) which uncovers (揭露) the “secret lives” of domestic cats (家猫). 50 cats were fitted with GPS trackers that pinpointed (为……准确定位) their position to within a few centimeters as they prowled (潜行) on their nightly rounds. The most exciting thing was the tiny collar-cameras they wear, offering viewers a cats-eye view of the world.
The cats were the focus (焦点) of the programme: Ginger, always ran into his neighbor’s garden at 4 a.m. to fight the resident (定居的) cat; Molly, travelled two hours from home to hunt from a birds’ nest in a wood; and there was Claude, who crept into (爬进) a stranger’s house each night to steal food.
Cats, as their owners already guessed, like to sneak through next-door’s cat-flap (开在门上供猫进出的猫洞) and raid (劫掠) the food bowl; they warn and then run away when they meet one another. As for cats, hunting mice means, mostly, too much trouble for them.
