New Zealand has a population of about 3.3 million and agriculture is still the major economy, although the relative contribution of agriculture is declining, while growing in other sectors. Historically, agricultural products were the main export products, with the main market being the United Kingdom. In the mid-1960s, agricultural products accounted for 92% of New Zealand’s total exports. It is worth mentioning that, while the importance of manufacturing is on the rise, by the early 1980s, manufacturing products still accounted for only 25% of total exports. Industrial protection was adopted in 1938
