1945年,延安鲁迅艺术学院根据晋察冀边区白毛仙姑的民间传说创作出歌剧《白毛女》,同年4月,为中国共产党第七次全国代表大会演出,受到热烈欢迎,后在解放区各地陆续上演,深受广大人民和八路军官兵的喜爱。剧本情节是地主恶霸黄世仁逼死佃户杨白劳,污辱其女喜儿,喜儿被迫逃入深山成了“白毛女”。八路军来到了该地区,喜儿重见天日。其主题是“旧社会把人变成鬼,新社会把鬼变成人”。采用中国北方民间音乐的曲调,吸收了戏曲音乐及其表现手法,并借鉴西欧歌剧的创作经验,是新秧歌运动基础上发展起来的中国第一部新歌剧。
