I remember several times after tests, Mr. Ward found that the students sitting around me had better scores , the others further awaythe worst in his grade. Mr. Ward suspected that some of the juniors “accidentally” got some of my answers.
记得经过几次考试后,沃兹先生发现坐得离我越近的成绩越好,越远的越差。他怀疑是我的邻座们“无意”中借鉴了我的答案。
So he and I had a very interesting talk about cheating.
于是,他和我就有关考场作弊的事进行了一次有意思的交谈。
Mr. Ward told me of some of the ways students have tried to cheat. The list sounds like a resume for the movie “Dumb and Dumber”.
沃兹先生给我讲了不少他“侦破”的考场作弊案。听那些故事就好像是在看那部《傻瓜和大傻瓜》的电影。
Scene1:1Student A intentionally(故意地)“drops” his pencil an unusually far distance . So he stands up and waltzes(跳华尔兹)slowly across the room to pick up it. On the way he glances right and left. He bends over slowly to get the pencil but the eyes are fixed on others’ paper, and walks back slowly glancing at papers left and right again. The funny thing is during multiple-choice objective tests; the pencils seemed to fall quite a lot. Whereas in proof tests the pencilsnever fall.
镜头一:A考试时,有人故意让手中的铅笔“掉”到地上,而且掉得非同寻常地远。于是,他地站起来,像是跳华尔兹一样横穿着教室去捡铅笔。在去的路上,左顾右盼……然后,缓慢地蹲下身去捡铅笔,当然眼睛是看着人家的试卷;在回坐位的路上,又是左顾右盼。奇怪的是,如果考题是标准化的多项选择题时,“掉”铅笔的人就特别多;而考分析题时,铅笔就都不“掉”了。
Scene 2: Get a piece of paper and write down the formulas(公式), rules, notes, definitions(定义)for the test. And the way to get access to it is various, during the test. The most common way is with a tiny bit of paper taped to the inside palm and watches it whenever need.
镜头二:在考试之前,把与考试有关的公式、法则、定义等等,写在一张小纸条上。能使小纸条顺利地带进考场的办法是多种多样的,最流行的方法是把小纸条藏在手心里,考试时,一有问题就可以看看手心。
Scene 3: Two students who are very good friends can relieve their review work, one student remembers half of the text and the other remembers the other half. So when it came to test time, they would each take their half of the test. The one tap his pencil lightly five times indicating (暗示)he needed the answer to number 5. The other kid would tap what ever the answer was in the same way. They even invent particular(特殊的)codes for fractions(小数点), decimals(分数), equations(方程式)and so on. To avoid the voice of taping desks too frequently, they would kicks chairs by turns…
镜头三:两个好朋友为了减少复习量,一人记一半内容,在考试时做各自复习的那部分。当其中一位需要知道第五题的答案时,就用铅笔在桌子上轻轻敲五下,无论答案是什么,另外一位用同样得方法敲出来。他们竟然还为小数点、分数、方程式等发明了特殊的密码。为了避免桌子敲得太频繁,他们还不时地交换方法,改用脚踢椅子……
These incidents aren’t very rare. It’s the last day of the entire school year. All left is math exam and summer holiday would begin.
这样的故事还有不少。这是整个学年的最后一天,完成今天的数学考试,暑假就要开始了。
I looked around with 15 minutes left. I noticed something very peculiar! Mr. Ward did not take his eyes off of one kid. That kid flipped papers back and forth and wrote furiously(猛烈的)and erased(擦掉)even more furiously. He seemed to use his calculator(计算器)a lot more than he needed.
还剩15分钟的时候,我环顾四周,有情况!沃兹先生的眼睛一直没有离开过一个家伙。那个家伙把试卷翻来翻去,猛涂猛改,似乎用计算器的次数远远超过他的实际需要。
After the test was finished, Mr. Ward gave “his end of the year speech”. Basically along the lines good luck and good job. Then he beckon(招手或点头示意)to the kid he was watching and tell the kid to go in the hall. Mr. Ward closed the door and walked out of the room silently and from that moment on, I heard about 4 minutes of Mr. Ward yelling(大叫)at the kid. He got his test ripped up(撕碎), give a zero for the end of the year exam and the quarter.
考试总算结束了。沃兹先生给我们作了“年终讲话”, 无非是些“Good luck”,“Good job”之类的话,然后他示意那个他一直盯着的那个家伙去大厅。沃兹先生静静地关上门走出教室。从那刻起,走廊里传来沃兹先生朝那个男孩的愤怒的大叫声,他把那个家伙的试卷撕得粉碎,并将他的全年成绩、学期成绩都记为0分。
Apparently(显然地)the guy had written formulas inside the sleeve of the calculator and every time he was "using his calculator" he was really cheating. Mr. Ward’s , “radar scaning” didn’t missed that.
很明显那家伙把一张写满公式、答案的小纸条夹在计算器的外壳里,当他假装计算时,实施作弊行为。当然,这没能逃过沃兹先生的“雷达扫描”。
Next year when Mr. Ward tell stories to his students, an addition cheating method must be added in his list.
明年沃兹先生给新学生讲故事时,在他所列的作弊方法里一定又多了一种。
