A man who was maverick in a time of uncertainty, a man looking for salvation for a time of complacency, may be vanquished. When John Kenneth Galbraith, the president of the American Economic Association, visited Beijing in 1972, regrettably Found only one of his early books in Peking University Library, “Modern Competition and Business Strategy” (1938). At an airport bookstore in New York City, he asked him if he had written a “big collision” in the stock market crash of 1929 (1955). The clerk said sympathetically, “Such books are not easy to sell.”
