Thompson Mine at Inco is conducting a major rock mechanics study. This study includes geomechanics and numerical modeling, as well as procedures for the design of vertical block mining methods. As we all know, the available technology is appropriate for predicting the initial stage of rock failure, but the nature of the forecast damage is limited. The rationale for the design is to calibrate the results of geotechnical analyzes based on systematic observations of mining incidents. The results of such calibrations will be used to predict mining events such as depletion or borehole closure and not to predict geotechnical events such as stress or strain.
