Insufficient weld strength in thin-coated tinplate products (0.25 lb / base case) has been a problem in quality control. By inspecting unqualified welds, it was found that there was an area of loss of solder wettability (see Figure 1). For the sake of comparison, the case of a good can weld is shown in FIG. 2. In this case, the weld separation is due to poor cohesion of the solder itself, not due to loss of wettability.
