曹雪芹在《红楼梦》中,有过几例性梦的描述,如贾宝玉梦入太虚仙子怀中,贾瑞对镜中玉影寻欢。在《牡丹亭》、《聊斋志异》、《金瓶梅》等书中,也都可见到性梦的描写。可见性梦是古已有之。性梦是青春期男女极常见的带有情欲的梦,男性发生比女性多。男性多发生在青春初期,女性多发生在青春后期和中年期。梦的内容出现性感的异性形象,两性漫游,性环境等,也有男女交欢的内容。后者可使当事人出现性高潮。
