BACKGROUND: Perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (pANCA) -positive is a specific marker for the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis (UC), but its relevance to disease severity and disease stage remains to be further studied. Objective: To investigate the significance of pANCA in patients with UC. Methods: From January 2008 to September 2012, 125 patients with UC in General Hospital of Beijing Military Region were enrolled. Serum pANCA was detected by indirect immunofluorescence. The correlation between them and clinical features was retrospectively analyzed. Results: The positive rate of pANCA in UC patients was significantly higher than that in healthy controls (51.2% vs 0, P <0.05). The positive rate of pANCA in active UC was significantly higher than that in remission (57.9% vs 11.1%, P <0.05). There was no significant difference between different clinical types, severity and extent of disease (P> 0.05). Conclusion: The positive rate of pANCA in UC patients may be related to the stage of the disease, but not to the clinical type, severity, extent of disease and so on.
