The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NIH), a subsidiary of the National Institutes of Health, has invested nearly $ 14 million in a five-year collaborative research project to develop contraceptive vaccines of limited duration. Unlike hormonal contraceptives, these vaccines have no other effect than controlling fertility. It is possible that the substances used as vaccines include some specific proteins on the zona pellucida of the sperm membrane and egg. The purpose of the study is to obtain an antigenic response. This reaction prevents egg fertilization without triggering an autoimmune response that causes premature ovarian failure and orchitis in men. The two centers, led respectively by Dr. Charlottesville Primakoff, are currently coordinating the vaccine development efforts of their own research institutes and other research institutes in order to make the development work more efficient
