The new institutional economics has begun to study the factors that determine the quality of the system. Traditionally, most of the empirical studies in this area have adopted parameterized linear methods. This method uses a specific function structure, sometimes the relationship between variables is imposed, easily lead to misunderstanding. This book examines the factors that influence the system based on a non-parametric and non-linear approach. Specifically, we use genetic programming (GP) algorithms to study the functional relationship between institutional quality and historical, economic, geographical, religious, and social factors. In addition, we also compared the results obtained using the GP algorithm with the parametric method (the traditional least-squares regression method). The empirical results show that the quality of the system using the traditional parametric viewpoint is accurate in the past literature.
