Xie Xin, Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Yu Biao, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, collaborated on the topic of active ingredients and weight loss mechanisms of the cactus butterflies. The research paper was published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on September 22. It is reported in the literature that P57, a member of the butterfly cactus, is the main active ingredient that inhibits appetite, but its mechanism of action is not clear. The team screened a large number of compounds found a compound extracted from the butterfly cactus Gordonoside F, but not P57, can specifically activate the metabolism of G protein-coupled receptor GPR119. Gordonoside F stimulates the secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and insulin by activating GPR119 and suppresses mouse appetite.
