Objective To understand the prevalence and influencing factors of periodontal disease in naval officers and soldiers. Methods According to the WHO standard, the status of gingivitis, periodontitis, dental calculus and periodontal attachment loss (AL) in a naval unit was investigated. Results The prevalence rates of gingivitis and periodontitis in 997 naval officers and soldiers were 65.4% and 4.7%, respectively. The detection rate of dental calculus was 32.8%. The patients with AL≤3 mm accounted for 96.7% and the patients with> 6 mm accounted for 1.2%. The gingivitis of the crew, the prevalence of periodontitis, the detection rate of dental calculus and the percentage of periodontal pocket> 6 mm were significantly higher than those on shore duty (P <0.01). The detection rate of dental calculus in male shore duty officers (29.7%) was significantly higher than that in female (25.8%, P <0.05). Different age, position, educational level of the periodontal disease were detected in different situations. Conclusion The prevalence rate of gingivitis and periodontitis in this department is high. Tooth stone is the main causative factor and must be regularly regimented.
