《神仙传》中记载,有一次汉武帝上嵩山,至山顶,忽见眼前一人,身高二丈,耳大垂肩,仙风道骨,气度不凡。帝急忙屈万乘之尊,上前施礼问道,仙者是何方人士,怎么会来到这里?老者答道,我乃嶷山中人,听说中岳嵩山顶的石头上,生有一种草,叫石菖蒲,此草一寸九节,吃了可以长生不老,故特来此地采集它。说完之后,突然不见了。汉武帝心中顿然大悟,对左右侍臣说,这个老者并非自己想采食菖蒲,而是特意来告诉朕的……从此,菖蒲被披上了一层神奇的色彩。每逢农历五月初五端午节,民间除了吃粽子、赛龙舟外,家家户户插艾蒿、挂菖蒲,以祈求“辟恶除邪”。

From then on, the calamus was covered with a magical color. During the Dragon Boat Festival on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month of the Lunar New Year, in addition to eating dumplings and dragon boat races, every household has to insert Artemisia halodendron and hang calamus in order to pray for “aversion of evil spirits”.
